Cream Soda was first developed by a man named Robert M Green, he was a soft drink vendor, and one day either by design or accident he added ice cream to his soda water. This was the first Cream Soda ever made and it was a huge hit becoming instantly popular all over America.
Still drunk today, the favourite in America tends to be a Root Beer float which is made from root beer with a dollop of ice cream in it. A favourite in the UK tends to be a Coke Float make from Coca-cola and ice cream.
Because of its huge popularity many companies have been producing Cream Soda as a bottled soft drink. Although these bottled or canned versions have no ice cream, they are made with soda water and vanilla syrup and cream or half and half. When it comes to the number of brands out there really are loads to choose from, some of the most popular brands are A+W, Stewarts, IBC and Jones.
In the UK you can buy Tesco's own brand Cream Soda for 55p for a 2l bottle. In Asda you can also buy a sugar free Cream Soda for 54p again for a 2l bottle. Both of these UK versions are a clear liquid whereas many of the American versions tend to be either a brown colour or even a pinkish colour. The American brand A+W can be bought for $0.58 per can, and a 12 oz bottle of IBC Cream Soda can cost $0.89. Cream Sodas have been a delight all over the world for many years and its also thanks to Ice Cream Sodas that we now have the dessert Ice Cream Sundaes. Cream Sodas are sold in cans and bottles and can be made at home by adding a dollop of ice cream to regular sodas.
